“Your emotions are important guides in your life. They are the signals your heart sends you to show you what is good for you in your life. Their messages are clear and unmistakable. Unfortunately, you have often learned to prefer only the pleasant emotions in your life, while frequently not wanting to hear the messages of the unpleasant ones. And yet, these in particular can show you valuable messages about your path. And we want you to take yourself seriously on your journey.” - the Akashic Records
The Meaning of Emotions
Emotions accompany us every day. Some feel light and pleasant, while others feel intense, uncomfortable or even overwhelming. Especially when it comes to unpleasant feelings, we can quickly develop the desire to get rid of them as soon as possible.
But what if your emotions are not working against you, but are trying to show you something?
As an Emotion Code® Practitioner, I deeply believe that emotions can carry important messages within them. While in the Emotion Code® we work with the intention of releasing trapped emotions whose original meaning may no longer be relevant to our lives today, I find it just as important to listen to the emotions that are showing themselves to us in the here and now.
Because sometimes an emotion does not need transformation. Sometimes, it first needs your attention.
Emotions as an Inner Compass
An emotion can draw your attention to the fact that a boundary has been crossed, that something is missing, or that something in your life is especially important to you right now.
Their meaning is not the same for every person. Anger does not automatically mean the same thing every time, just as sadness or fear do not always mean the same thing. And yet, certain emotions can offer us clues that we can follow with curiosity.
So perhaps, instead of asking yourself: “How can I get rid of this feeling?”
you might ask: “What is this feeling trying to show me right now?”
Anger – Where Is a Boundary Needed?
Anger holds an incredible amount of power. It can be a powerful and strong ally in your life, carrying the valuable task of protecting you on your path. Anger can arise when you feel you have been treated unfairly, when a boundary has been crossed, or when something happens that goes against your values. In this way, it always shows you that one of your boundaries has been crossed.
Anger carries a strong energy within it. When used and expressed without reflection, this force has the potential to destroy, to cause aggression and to damage relationships instead of strengthening you and others. But when you work with your anger consciously, understand its meaning, and recognise that it is trying to show you that one of your boundaries has been crossed, it can help you use its power thoughtfully and rebuild your boundaries with love for yourself and for others, while standing up for yourself.
Before blindly following your anger, it can therefore be helpful to step away for a moment and ask yourself:
Which of my boundaries has just been violated?
Where have I energetically allowed my boundaries to be crossed?
What is so important to me that my anger wants to protect it?
What is needed, in a healthy way, to restore this important boundary for myself?
What action is my anger actually trying to give me strength and energy for?
And: How can I take better care of my own boundaries and treat my own life with more respect and consideration?
When you take the time to understand what is truly behind your anger, you gain valuable insights about yourself. At the same time, this reduces the chance that you will use the powerful energy of anger in a destructive way, and your inner space can become free to express this valuable emotion in a positive form.
Sadness – What Wants to Be Grieved?
Sadness often accompanies endings, loss or change. The cleansing power of grief can help us let go of things and open ourselves to new chapters, experiences and moments in our lives.
Grief can arise within us for so many reasons. Sometimes we lose someone we love, and the healing power of grief helps us prepare for a new chapter in our lives without that beloved person. But sometimes we also grieve a hope, a chapter of our life, a relationship, an idea of our future, or something we deeply wished for.
Sadness can invite us to slow down and acknowledge that something truly mattered to us. At the same time, it helps us let go, become clearer and renew ourselves so that we can enter the next chapter of our lives in a new way.
One question you can ask yourself when you feel sadness within you is:
What in my life wants to be grieved?
Where does a new love want to be found in my life?
What in my life has now come to an end?
What may I now let go of with love?
What may the sacred power of grief release and renew within me?
When you allow grief to flow through your life, you allow the power of renewal within you to make you new again and to help you gently release the pain you carry, step by step, so that you can become ready for a new chapter on your journey.
Envy – What Am I Longing For?
Envy is often seen as something negative. And yet, it can be a surprisingly honest guide.
Perhaps you see something in another person’s life and feel a sting inside. Hidden behind this feeling may be your own longings and desires. Envy can show you, in a powerful way, what you yourself wish for in your life, and through this it can become a powerful motivator for your own growth.
Learning to acknowledge, see and accept your own desires with love can help you begin a healthy and loving relationship with your envy, rather than viewing it as something negative. You may notice that once you recognise the wishes hidden behind your envy, it can become much easier to genuinely feel happy for the other person, while the pain of not yet having what you desire becomes lighter.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself when you feel envy:
What am I longing for myself?
What do I wish for?
And: What could I do today to move just a little closer to this goal?
In this way, envy no longer has to be something you judge yourself for, but instead becomes a sign showing you where a part of you would like to grow.
Boredom – What Wants to Be Born Anew?
Boredom is a feeling that we are often very successful at fighting in today’s world: with social media, Netflix and a thousand things that are quickly and easily available to us. And yet, the emotion of boredom can be a helpful guide that supports us in allowing something valuable and new to flow through us into this world.
While we often interpret boredom as a sign that “nothing is happening,” it can also be a valuable in-between space showing us that the old no longer truly fulfils us, while something new has not yet become fully visible. In this way, it can point to a change taking place within us — a stage in which we are waiting for a new development that wants to be lived and that may enrich our lives.
When we do not immediately fill the emptiness, but allow ourselves to wait, we help the new take root within us and open ourselves to something new and valuable entering our lives. By consciously holding this empty space within ourselves, we give our inner world room to reveal new thoughts, wishes and creative impulses.
Perhaps your boredom is trying to make you aware that you are longing for change, inspiration or a new experience.
Questions you can ask yourself when you are faced with this feeling are therefore:
What am I truly missing right now?
What am I longing for when I do not immediately distract myself?
What wants to arise anew in my life through this open space?
Allowing the emotion of boredom, holding it within yourself and accepting it, while feeling grateful that something new wants to enter your life, can become a very special gift on your path — one that may bless you with new sources of joy and fulfilment.
Shame – Which Part of Me Wants to Be Accepted?
In spiritual models, shame is often described as the lowest-vibrating emotion and is associated with the feeling: “There is something wrong with me.” While shame is therefore often judged — even in spiritual circles — I believe that this emotion, too, carries very valuable messages for you.
Because the feeling of shame shows you that there are parts or elements within you that do not feel accepted or loved, that feel wrong, and that you feel you would rather hide.
To better understand the positive message behind shame, I asked the Akashic Records about its meaning. Here is what the Akashic Records say about the feeling of shame:
“The feeling of shame is a powerful guide, my child, and it can essentially mean several different things at the same time. On the one hand, it can show you where you have done something wrong. In this case, it is your task to see your mistake and to face it with love. It can also mean that you do not feel that you belong, and this, too, can be possible for a variety of reasons. What is always important is that you analyse the reason for this feeling.
If you realise that there is something within you that needs your help, then give yourself that help. Seek the therapy you need, work with the inner parts within you, speak with those you need to speak with in order to help yourself. You may be certain, my child, that we do not judge, but only you yourself can protect yourself from your own judgement.
Both values that are not true for you, a very restrictive network of beliefs, thoughts that do not serve you, but also difficult and serious issues can lie behind what you are experiencing. Look at all of them with love, and give them the help you need.
Shame can be something that resolves quickly when you recognise that there was never anything wrong with you, and it can also be an important indicator of a great path of development that is calling you to grow into your greatness and into a positive strength within yourself. Only you can discover what lies behind your shame, my child. But observe it carefully. And always give yourself the help you need.”
If you want to work with the feeling of shame within you and understand what lies behind it when you experience it, the following questions may help:
Which part of me would most like to hide right now?
What would this part of me need instead?
Do my beliefs and rules truly serve my highest divine good?
Is what I feel ashamed of really something in which I am wrong, or something within me that I wrongly perceive as being wrong?
How can I help myself here?
Or: Is this something for which I am judging myself very harshly?
Where do my judgements come from in this case?
Getting to the root of your shame can therefore become a great opportunity for personal growth.
Joy – What Wants to Grow in My Life?
Usually, it is easier for us to receive the messages of our positive emotions. Naturally, we tend to want more of the feelings that feel good within us. So, to bring this article to a loving close, the messages of pleasant emotions deserve to be seen as well. Because the emotions we enjoy also carry important messages for us. Your joy, for example, can show you what is good for you, what makes you feel alive and what makes you feel connected.
If you like, you can ask yourself the following questions about your joy to get to know yourself even better:
What exactly is making me happy right now?
How could I invite a little more of this into my life?
Recognising what brings you joy can help you invite much more of it into your life and walk your path in an even happier way.
Listen to Your Emotions
You do not have to analyse every emotion, and you do not have to immediately follow every emotion either. But recognising that even unpleasant emotions can carry valuable messages about you — and can tell you meaningful things about yourself throughout every moment of your day — can help you develop a more natural relationship with them.
Listening to your emotions helps you notice the subtle signals of your heart and, step by step, come into greater alignment with yourself. The more often you practise listening to yourself, the easier it can become to integrate the messages of your emotions into your life and to live in alignment with this deeper source of wisdom within you.
